Joseph Tilden is the son who stayed in Scituate. His descendents live on the original Nathaniel Tilden farm. Joan has been in touch with Sam Tilden who is a descendent of Joseph (9th generation). In one letter he said the "St. Louis branch" (Thomas Tilden branch) owned the farm during the Civil War.
(Update, November 2000) Joan visited Sam Tilden at the Scituate Tilden farm. Two-thirds of the original property has now been sold. Sam is the only Tilden left and he is 87 years old. He is afraid the property will 'go out of the family' when he dies, as his children (a son and a daughter) would not be able to keep the property.
