Search Engines help you find sites. Generally you just type in a word, topic or the subject matter you're looking for and either press enter or click on the submit button. This is like going to the reference desk and getting your questions answered with loads of sites to check out. With some search engines, like AltaVista you can "narrow" your search by using multiple words and phrases by using the plus "+" an minus "-" signs to limit the results.
Here's an example of how you can manipulate the results of a search. If you enter the following for you search:
"multiple sclerosis" +fatigue -medication
The search engine will return a different set of answers than just search on "multiple sclerosis" would by itself. So if you know what you want to look for, using simple word combinations like that shown above you will get different websites to go to each time.
Ask Jeeves is a site where the search engine tries to figure out what your question is and then goes out to many different search engines and submits multiple requests for matches. I like the way Jeeves returns their list of places to look. Perhaps you will too. They make it easy to return to their list of possible places to go.
Now AltaVista provides FREE INTERNET ACCESS!!! Talk about a start! Of course what they do with that "free access" is track where everyone wants to go (just like AOL of MSN does already). It seems that advertisers want to know these things. Unfortunately that's the price we pay. Most sites already track how often you visit their site by using "cookies" anyway. Let's face it, advertisers have been tracking all of us since they discovered they can create demand rather than developing what we actually need. Is it too late to rebel?
Okay, now that you know where to go to look for stuff and what to ask for, is there another place to look for information about multiple sclerosis specifically? You know the answer, don't you? The umbrella group of multiple sclerosis societies is always a good place to start.
