The Vasa Church records note that Sven came from Ljungby in 1855 (now Trolle-Ljungby). Many people in the Vasa parish were from Ljungby. In the book "Minnesota Swedes - The Emigration from Trolle Ljungby to Goodhue County 1855 - 1912" by Lilly Setterdahl it is noted that Sven (Swan) Olson's family lived on farm No. 12 in the village of Vestra Ljungby. (This book traces many of the emigrants from Trolle Ljungby and contains many letters written by Sven to his family in Sweden from Vasa (he arrived there in 1855). After his first wife died he married Anna Brita Bennet(t) (Berndtsdotter) who was hired as a housekeeper in his home following the death of his first wife. (Anna is Johanna's sister - thereby Joan's great aunt. (Also note, Sven's daughter from his first marriage, Ellen married Charles Bennett Anna Brita's brother)
In her book, Ms Setterdahl traces the emigrants from Trolle Ljungby which she describes as a 'parish with an army of landless workers - proletarians, who were largely dependent on the Count for their livelihood. Either they had to obtain a tenant contract . . to rent a small farm, or they had to work as farm servants. When the children of the Trolle Ljungby parishioners reached adulthood, they could not expect to become farm owners. . . the most they could hope for was to take over the contract of a tenant farm.' Interestingly, Trolle Ljungby is still owned by by descendants of the original Swedish Royalty and is still farmed by 'tenants' (although they now have an organization and have been active in petitioning the government to allow them to purchase their farms)
Xeroxed copies of pages of the Trolle L. book are in Joan's notebook. There are many letters written by Swan Olson and his family to each other which give an interesting account of the history of the times when so many Swedes immigrated.
